The Great Commission Became His Ambition: Adoniram Judson’s Stirring Legacy

“While his name has faded from our collective memory, Adoniram Judson Jr. (1788–1850) was one of the most famous men of his century. In the eyes of the world, Judson seemed destined for greatness. He excelled at nearly everything he did, advancing in Latin, rhetoric, and mathematics so quickly that he entered the College of Rhode Island (later Brown University) at the age of sixteen. During his senior year of college, Judson launched his own school while still managing to graduate as valedictorian. He revered the great men of history, but his “burning ambition” (as he put it) was to surpass them. One day, Judson believed, his name would shine. He was right. But when it did, it wasn’t his story he told.”

Dad, Don’t Shoot Yourself in the Foot

“Part of what we must model to our children is the centrality of the local church in the life and faith of the Christian.”

Comparison Is the Enemy of Contentment

“Leadership mistakes are often not a single event but an attitude, habit, or mind-set that has been forming for years. Many, if not most, leaders have fallen into the trap of comparing and competing with others in ministry. It can fuel discord, dissention, and jealousy on staff teams, and it never results in anything pleasing to Jesus. Jealousy and coveting among church staff is often the white elephant in the room. It seldom bears good fruit and can create huge dysfunctions and trust barriers.”
