Don’t Preach a Commentary

“The congregation was impressed. They now knew the Greek words, the interpretive options, and the history of how Calvin, Luther, and Ryle interpreted the verse. But no hearts were changed. No sinners were brought to repentance. No mourning widows comforted. No parents equipped for the week. No Jesus exalted. No gospel.”

Why I Complain

“I’m 36 now. And like a genetic predisposition that you swear off in adolescence and surrender to later, the complaining-as-happiness mind virus is alive and well in me. Recently I was driving home after what anyone would consider to be a successful and happy day, filled with much grace, and realized I had spent nearly the entire drive ruminating on a few things that were frustrating to me.”

The Daily Battleground We Often Ignore in Therapy Culture

“Identifying the right theater for battle matters. The Christian life is no different. We live in a therapeutic age that trains us to label every emotional struggle as disease. We are trained to identify illnesses for which we bear no responsibility. Our mental state is determined solely by forces outside our control.”
